About the project

Frihamnstorget’s urban garden is part of Climate Quilts, a two-year project aimed at exploring how an urban space can be transformed to a biologically and socially sustainable space. The project is running simultaneously in Sweden, the Netherlands, Estonia and Italy. Sweden is represented by Frihamnstorget in Stockholm, in a coordinated collaboration between Frihamnstorgets Kulturförening, Blivande and RISE.

The project harbours Urban Gardening Workshops and Plantasia, an event-series about sustainability and urban gardening. Everyone who is interested is welcome to join!

At Frihamnstorget, urban farming has been developing since 2023 and in the beginning, it consisted of 50 pallet collars. In 2026 and 2027, Climate Quilts enables an expansion to an urban garden, with even more cultivated spaces.

Upcoming Events

  • Urban Gardening Workshop

The workshops are circa 2 hours long. You learn how to sow, plant and look after what is growing in our garden spaces. Before the upcoming season, you have the chance to decide what will grow here, especially in the Kitchen Garden. When we create new flower beds, you can even partake in design-decisions, building and painting.

You do not need to have previous experience of gardening but if you have, you are welcome to share your skills with us.

This year’s groups are already fully booked. If you want to be a part of the Green Team in 2027, sign up now!

We start the next season in late January with planning workshops. Registration is required.

    Welcome to our Green Team!

  • Plantasia Events

    16th of July 18.00 - 20.00h

Once a month, we invite you to Plantasia, an event where you can mingle and take part in a creative workshop. On top of this, you are welcome to bbq and play board games.

In the upcoming workshop, you have the chance to create a dreamcatcher from recycled materials. The workshops’ content changes but the focus remains on sustainability.

You do not need to have previous experience of working with sustainability or connected topics.

Read more about the workshop in July in the link below. We look forward to seeing you there!
    Registration is required.

    Welcome to Plantasia!

Frihamnstorget’s Urban Garden

Kitchen Garden

The Kitchen Garden, which consists of 50 pallet collars, harbours plants that are eatable and cultivated in a biologically sustainable way.

Here, we plant a range of different cultivars to learn more about various vegetables and berries.

The harvest is shared primarily between the participants of the Green Team.

Perennial Garden

At first, the Perennial Garden was a traffic island on the old parking space. Now it has been transformed into a blooming flower bed where plants grow that live longer than two years (perennial).

The plants that grow here are not eatable because the ground could contain toxins.

We will replenish the Perennial Garden with flower bulbs in fall, and with more plants next year.

Hidden Garden

The Hidden Garden received its name because it was a hidden and forgotten place behind two containers.

The sun appears in the late afternoon, and the choice of plants must be adapted to the late sun.

This is a place to visit for cozy conversations and to escape the sun during warm days.

Kitchen Garden

The cultivation boxes received fertilizer in form of fungal mycelium, and fresh soil before this year’s seeds were planted.

The plant tags are made from recycled wine corks. They remain well visible as they vegetables grow higher.

Perennial Garden

Because the Perennial Garden was meant to look nice this year already, we decided to plant young plants instead of sowing seeds.

Now, in the Perennial Garden grows among other nepeta, white lavender och different grasses.

In fall, we plant flower bulbs that will bring us snowdrops and, hopefully, tulips in spring.

Hidden Garden

After the undergrowth has been cleared and plenty of soil and fertilizer have been added, the flower beds have now taken shape and the first plants have been put in place, a rose and a honeysuckle.

The Green Team has begun working on building seating areas and other features. There is a lot left to do, and the work will continue into next year, when the site will be fully completed.

Green Team in Action!

The Green Team consisted of two groups in spring 2026. A group of students, which met on Friday mornings, and a mixed bigger group, which met on Sundays or Wednesday evenings. The Urban Gardening Workshops are led by Lotta Näslund. You are welcome to send her an email if you have questions: lotta@frihamnstorget.se

If you want to be a part of the Green Team in 2027, sign up now! More information about the dates and the setup will be published on this website in January.
